SWAT Firearms Instructor Course




 JUNE 23-26, 2014

Target Audience:  SWAT Personnel

Pre-Requisite:  Active SWAT Member

Hours – Total: 40 Career: 40 Legal:  0 Cultural: 0

Maryland and Washington, DC operators – Must submit course paperwork to your Department of Criminal Justice Services for an exemption.


·         For SWAT personnel who are seeking their Basic Firearms Instructor Certification.  This course will develop the student’s ability to instruct firearms marksmanship, tactics and weapon manipulation.  This course prepares experienced SWAT personnel to conduct firearms training. 


Location and Hours:

·         Day 1 / 1300-2330 – Arlington County Police Headquarters (1425 N. Courthouse Road/ Parking placards will be provided)

·         Day 2-4/ 1300-2330  – Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Dulles Firearms Range (Directions will be provided)



·         Arlington County Tactical Training Unit/SWAT



·         Attendees must be active members of an NCRSA SWAT Team, completed a General Instructor Development Course and earn a minimum passing score of 90% on each of the following courses.

o    60-round Modified Double Action Qualification Course

o     50-round Virginia Tactical Qualification Course

o    10-round Shotgun Qualification Course

o    10-round Bull’s Eye Qualification Course

o    Maryland and DC operators must meet your jurisdictions qualification standards for firearms instructor eligibility. 

o    Pre-qualification on each operator’s agency qualification courses is the responsibility of the agency.

o    This must be submitted prior to the course on department/agency letterhead. 

·         On day 2-4 students must pass all Qualification Courses.   Failure to qualify with a passing score of 90% on each course will result in dismissal from the Firearm’s Instructor Course.

·         Personnel are required to bring their agency pistol (2000 rounds) and shotgun (50 slug rounds) ammunition.

·         This course will cover:

o    Firearms and Range Safety

o    Target Analysis

o    Ballistics

o    Ammunition

o    Semi-Automatic Pistol

o    Range Activities

o    Care and Maintenance of Weapons

o    Officer Survival

o    Instructional Methods

o    Lesson Plan Development

o    Practical Exercises

o    Written Exercises

o    Use of Force


Due to Dulles Airport security regulations, all students must supply:

·         Full name, agency name and badge number

o    Non-NVCJA members must provide their student’s SSN.  This is a requirement by NVCJA for proper course registration.

·         Driver’s License and agency credentials must be shown to security personnel at the gate. 

·         This information must be sent to the Arlington County Police Department no later than one (1) week prior to the course.
